This GSM blend shows intense berry fruit characters typical of ripe fruit picked at high baume. Oak does not play a dominant role in this wine letting the fruit show its full potential. The wine is of great intensity, exhibiting spicy, full flavours with balance and structure. Velvety n big shiraz. $31 wine directions

1st burgundy 1er cru to kick start my obsession!! Ugh so expensive!! Domaines Jacques Cacheux 2003 la croix rameau Funky straight from the bottle with leather and bramble nuances dominating the dark-red fruit flavours. After time, the wine really opened up very nicely, with darkish fruits and a nicely perfurmed tone. On the palate, it showed tart cherry fruit and a flush of spice or liquorice (?) with smoky oak at the end of the glass. Flat n not fresh But still structured. Rather silky tannins. After more time in the glass, the complex layers of aromas show. Red berries with hint of spice n memorAble elements, the wine really came together. 2009 Ruby red colour with intense perfumes of blackberries and red fruits on the nose. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied, with a silky texture lifted by good acidity and supple tannins. Perfumes of chocolate and damsons linger to the finish with a touch of spice from the nicely tempered oak.Vajra's vineyards are more than 50 years old and are located in the commune of Barolo, in Vergne. The soil is rich in calcareous marl, with rocky outcrops, giving elegant, fragrant and particularly longlived wines.Grapes were hand harvested in the last week of September. $60 plus straits wine.

Hot rocks, candied licorice and smoky tobacco dominate the upright and focused nose that gains a touch of funk with notes of mouldiness of the earth, flowers, and cocoa, toast, buttery caramel oak notes. In the mouth this is very smooth and easy with the richness to back it up. There is good balancing acid and nice, crisp tannins that give this lean yet ripe wine a refreshing feel up front that turns a bit heavy on the backend that is dominated by drying and astringent tannins. A nice marriage of fruit and wood with nice earthy shale notes offer some cut on the back end and black cherry fruit that lacks a bit of intensity though there is a long finish that has just a hint of leafiness candied/dried peach, cinnamon and braised fennel and orange juice edge. Solid Rioja!! Straits wine $70+?

The first impressions of Piccini Memoro are how port-like it is. A deep, deep ruby colour and dark cherry aroma. It seems quite viscous too – not surprising at 14% alcohol. not as sweet as a typical port.It may look ‘big’ in the glass, but I was pleasantly surprised by how smooth and almost sophisticated it was to taste. There were no shouty tannins it was velvety, medium bodied and again fruity. I tasted dried black cherries and prunes with a little bit of spicy-smokeyness too. The fruity flavours lingered in the mouth – and pleasantly so. Truly Italian.

Light red colour. Layered flavours. Initial red fruit on the nose and palette. The palate is powerful and complex, with a nice spiced finish. Nice to taste now, or can be cellared for up to 20 years. $65 from Wine connection

Review says "elegant n understated." Not complex, dark fruits, acidic. Initial tasting.boasted a.fruity bouquet almost fresh. Maybe with bottle age will mellow the tannins. Decanted for 1hr not much change in length. Mouthfeel clingy $50 from.cold.storage jelita
